Senior Legal Counsel – Corporate

This role involves offering comprehensive legal guidance and support to the Legal Department, focusing on safeguarding the company's interests and ensuring strict adherence to legal and regulatory frameworks. Key responsibilities include actively managing non-claims litigation, proactively identifying and mitigating legal and regulatory risks, overseeing the entire contract management lifecycle from drafting to execution, providing expert legal advisory on new legislative developments and their business implications, and efficiently handling all conveyancing assignments.

1. Manage non-claims litigation, including issuing instructions to external lawyers, reviewing correspondence and opinions, preparing witnesses for court, and managing external counsel service level agreements and fees.
2. Identify, assess, and develop strategies for mitigating legal and regulatory risks in alignment with the Company’s Risk Appetite, maintaining the Legal Risk Register, and ensuring adequate legal provisions are reviewed.
3. Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts and agreements, providing oversight to their execution and maintaining the contract management system.
4. Monitor changes in laws and regulations, interpret legal developments, advise management on business impacts, and undertake legal research to draft advisory memos.
5. Handle conveyancing assignments, including lease/tenancy negotiations, due diligence, registration at registries, managing external conveyancing counsel, and maintaining the Conveyance Register.

1. Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from an accredited university.
2. Post Graduate Diploma (Dip KSL) from the Kenya School of Law.
3. Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practicing certificate.
4. At least five (5) years of post-admission experience in a top-tier private law firm or a financial institution/reputable organization.
5. Specialization in civil litigation and corporate advisory is required.
6. Experience in a general insurance company is highly preferred.
7. Possess strong commercial acumen, analytical, and negotiation skills.
8. Be proficient in legal technology (techno-savvy).
9. Demonstrate strong integrity.
10. Exhibit excellent communication and research skills.
