Civil Engineer

The Civil Engineer will manage the planning, coordination, supervision, and technical execution of civil and infrastructure works at Magnate City. This includes ensuring all construction activities align with approved drawings, specifications, statutory requirements, quality standards, budgets, and project timelines. The role provides daily technical oversight for site activities such as earthworks, roads, drainage, water and sewer infrastructure, structural works, utilities, and external works. The engineer will also coordinate various stakeholders including contractors, consultants, and suppliers, and monitor quantities, workmanship, material usage, project progress, variations, defects, and compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

1. Supervise and coordinate daily civil and infrastructure construction activities at Magnate City.
2. Ensure construction adheres to approved architectural, structural, and civil drawings, specifications, Bills of Quantities (BQ), method statements, and applicable standards.
3. Oversee earthworks, excavation, filling, roads, pavements, kerbs, parking areas, storm-water drainage, water reticulation, sewer systems, foundations, reinforced concrete works, structural and masonry works, utility ducts, and landscaping-related civil works.
4. Conduct regular site inspections to identify and address workmanship, quality, or technical deficiencies.
5. Verify setting-out, levels, dimensions, and coordinates before and during construction.
6. Monitor contractor performance against approved work programmes and project milestones.
7. Review civil and structural drawings, specifications, and technical documents for discrepancies or constructability concerns before execution.
8. Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, MEP consultants, contractors, and other specialists to resolve technical and site coordination issues.
9. Participate in site, technical, and project progress meetings.
10. Prepare and/or review method statements, technical submissions, Requests for Information (RFIs), inspection requests, and material approvals.
11. Ensure all drawing and specification revisions are communicated and implemented on site.
12. Maintain accurate as-built information and support the preparation of final as-built drawings and project handover documentation.
13. Ensure materials delivered to site comply with approved specifications and quality requirements.
14. Coordinate and witness relevant field and laboratory tests for concrete, soil compaction, aggregates, and other construction materials.
15. Inspect works before subsequent activities and ensure rectification of defective or non-conforming work.
16. Maintain appropriate inspection, testing, and quality-control records.
17. Monitor snagging and defects, ensuring closure before handover.
18. Monitor actual construction progress against approved programmes and milestones.
19. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports, including photographs, completed works, outstanding works, constraints, and corrective actions.
20. Identify potential delays, technical risks, and construction bottlenecks, recommending mitigation measures.
21. Track contractor resources, including labour, equipment, and materials, against planned requirements.
22. Support the preparation and review of construction schedules and short-term work programmes.
23. Promptly escalate significant delays, defects, cost implications, or technical risks to management.
24. Collaborate with the Quantity Surveyor/Project Manager to monitor project costs against approved budgets.
25. Verify quantities and measurements of completed civil works for contractor valuation and certification.
26. Review variation requests and provide technical justification before approval.
27. Monitor material utilisation to minimise wastage, loss, and rework.
28. Verify required materials against drawings, BQs, and construction programmes before requisition.
29. Support procurement by preparing or reviewing technical specifications and evaluating the technical suitability of proposed materials and suppliers.
30. Coordinate civil contractors and subcontractors, monitoring compliance with contractual and technical requirements.
31. Provide technical direction and clarification to site teams as needed.
32. Monitor contractor productivity, workmanship, staffing, and equipment deployment.
33. Liaise with consultants, authorities, utility providers, and other stakeholders on technical matters.
34. Participate in contractor performance evaluations.
35. Maintain professional working relationships while ensuring contractor accountability for quality, cost, safety, and timelines.
36. Ensure civil works comply with applicable occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
37. Work with the Health & Safety team to identify and control construction-related hazards.
38. Ensure contractors implement approved safety procedures, method statements, and risk assessments.
39. Stop or escalate unsafe or materially non-compliant works when necessary.
40. Support compliance with relevant permits, approvals, building regulations, environmental requirements, and Kenyan construction standards.
41. Ensure required inspections and approvals are obtained from relevant authorities at appropriate project stages.
42. Maintain comprehensive site records, including drawings, inspection reports, test results, site instructions, RFIs, progress reports, and correspondence.
43. Maintain records of changes and variations during construction.
44. Participate in practical completion inspections, snagging, and defects-liability inspections.
45. Ensure all identified defects are documented, assigned, and closed.
46. Support the compilation of project technical handover documentation, including as-built drawings, test certificates, and relevant approvals.

1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university.
2. Registered as a Graduate Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) or appropriately registered in Kenya.
3. Minimum of 5 years of relevant post-graduate experience in civil engineering and construction/site supervision.
4. Demonstrated experience in residential, commercial, mixed-use, or infrastructure development projects.
5. Strong knowledge of construction methods, civil works, structural drawings, specifications, and quality-control procedures.
6. Proficiency in AutoCAD and other relevant engineering/project software.
7. Ability to interpret architectural, structural, civil, and services drawings.
8. Working knowledge of Bills of Quantities, construction programmes, contractor valuations, and variation management.
9. Good understanding of applicable Kenyan construction, safety, and regulatory requirements.
10. Professional Engineer registration with EBK (Added Advantage).
11. Membership in the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) (Added Advantage).
12. Experience in large-scale real-estate or mixed-use development projects (Added Advantage).
13. Experience with Civil 3D, MS Project, Primavera, or similar project-management/design applications (Added Advantage).
14. Experience in site supervision and civil construction management.
15. Experience with roads, drainage, sewer, water, and external infrastructure works.
16. Experience with concrete, structural, and foundation works.
17. Proficiency in setting-out and interpreting engineering drawings.
18. Experience in contractor and subcontractor supervision.
