Job Description
The Legal Assistant will ensure proactive and timely delivery of legal counseling to the client's Kenyan operations, successfully implementing and executing the Legal Functional strategy and objectives. The role involves advising the client's entities in Kenya on all legal matters related to commercial, operational, governance, and regulatory aspects of their business.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and execution of the Legal functional strategy.
- Monitor and interpret Kenya's legislative environment to ensure the business understands and meets its legal obligations.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of regulatory issues and frameworks, developing informed solutions to address regulatory constraints.
- Manage litigation instituted by or against the business as allocated by the Head of Legal, Kenya, including devising and executing case strategy.
- Support the Head of Legal, Kenya, in entity management and ensuring compliance with good corporate governance practices for the client's entities in Kenya.
- Participate in cross-functional business projects and initiatives to assess, monitor, and anticipate potential threats, minimizing legal risks and achieving business objectives.
- Draft, negotiate, and review contractual documentation, and develop appropriate standard formats to optimize efficiencies within the Legal sub-function.
- Execute relevant administrative activities within the function to ensure resource availability, continuous information flow, and updated records.
- Ensure an improved control environment in Legal, aligned with the business strategy.
- Communicate effectively across functions and within the department to keep stakeholders informed and find solutions for mutual interest problems.
- Support, implement, and achieve the strategic plans and objectives of the Legal sub-function in line with the business strategy.
- Communicate powerfully and effectively to the business on the relevance and strategic importance of this role's area of responsibility.
- Identify new initiatives and proposals aligned with business strategy and values to ensure legal operations are central to the business, acting as effective risk managers and business partners.
- Map out internal and external stakeholders pertinent to areas of responsibility and build relationships to optimize the effectiveness of legal actions.
- Continuously optimize and build improved systems and work processes to drive efficiency and reduce costs.
Requirements
- Possess a recognized legal qualification from a reputable academic institution.
- Demonstrate competence in providing legal advice to internal stakeholders.
- Have at least 3-4 years of post-qualification legal experience.
- Preferably have at least 2-3 years of experience in fast-paced law firms.
- Experience in litigation management is required.
- Desirable to have experience in company secretarial practice and board matters (CPSK).
- Possess thorough knowledge of local substantive and procedural laws relevant to areas such as Commercial Law, labor laws, land laws, factory/manufacturing regulations, and EHS legislation.
- Exhibit strong negotiation, written, and verbal communication skills.
