Job Description

The Radiographer-Sonographer will be responsible for safely conducting approved ultrasound, X-ray, CT, portable, and theatre imaging examinations to diagnostic standards. This includes reviewing requests, confirming patient identity and examination details, and assessing patient safety concerns like pain, mobility, and pregnancy status. The role requires active monitoring of the imaging queue, coordinating demand across different modalities, and communicating any delays to relevant departments. The individual will also perform daily equipment checks, detect and report faults, and participate in departmental improvements, audits, and meetings. Collaboration with radiologists, nurses, clinicians, and other staff is essential, along with providing reliable shift, weekend, and on-call coverage.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform approved ultrasound, X-ray, CT, portable, and theatre imaging examinations safely and to diagnostic standards.
  2. Review requests, clinical indications, and patient preparation, clarifying any incomplete or unsafe requests.
  3. Use at least two patient identifiers to confirm the correct examination, body part, and laterality before imaging.
  4. Assess patient pain, mobility, falls risk, pregnancy status, allergies, and other safety concerns, communicating realistic waiting and report times.
  5. Actively monitor the live queue, coordinate CT/X-ray/ultrasound/theatre demand, and communicate delays to relevant departments.
  6. Complete and sign opening, closing, cleaning, and manufacturer-required quality control checks.
  7. Detect image artefacts, performance deviations, and safety defects, ensuring the area is safe, isolating unsafe equipment, and reporting faults during the same shift.
  8. Participate constructively in huddles, audits, incident reviews, departmental meetings, SOP implementation, and service-improvement projects.
  9. Work collaboratively with the radiologist, Radiographer-in-Charge, medical secretary, nurses, clinicians, theatre staff, biomedical engineering, and management.
  10. Provide reliable shift, weekend, on-call, and theatre coverage according to the roster, notifying management early of foreseeable absences.
  11. Carry out other reasonable duties within professional scope and verified competence as assigned by the authorized supervisor.

Requirements

  1. Hold a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Medical Imaging Sciences, Diagnostic Radiography, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
  2. Be registered and licensed to practice by the Radiographers Board of Kenya, with a valid annual practicing certificate.
  3. Possess documented competency in diagnostic ultrasound.
  4. Have at least 3 years of post-qualification clinical experience, including substantial hands-on ultrasound practice and experience in digital radiography.
  5. Maintain current Basic Life Support certification.
  6. Demonstrate competence in HMIS/RIS/PACS workflows, patient-data verification, image labelling, archiving, report tracking, and downtime documentation.
  7. Exhibit integrity, punctuality, respectful conduct, confidentiality, teamwork, and a willingness to work shifts, on-call, or theatre duties as rostered.
