Maintenance Technician – Production (Technical workshop Paint Technician)

Kenya Airways PLC is a leading African airline founded in 1950, based in Nairobi, Kenya. It operates in the aviation industry, providing air transport services.

The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for preparing and applying protective and decorative coatings on various aircraft components, ensuring all work adheres to required technical and quality standards. This position also involves maintaining the aircraft livery, painting components, and equipment to meet Kenya Airways, KCAA, and other applicable regulatory requirements, while also contributing to the airline's market appeal. The role requires expertise in surface preparation, paint application, quality control, equipment maintenance, safety compliance, and meticulous documentation.

1. Prepare surfaces by removing old paint, corrosion, and contaminants using chemical and mechanical methods.
2. Clean, mask, sand, and chemically treat surfaces before paint application.
3. Apply paint using appropriate techniques to achieve the required finish on components.
4. Work with various paint products including epoxy, polyurethane, enamel, and chromate-based materials.
5. Rectify paint defects such as runs, sags, fisheyes, or foreign object debris (FOD) contamination.
6. Diagnose and resolve issues related to paint application, adhesion, or finish.
7. Inspect and document all work to ensure compliance with internal procedures, OEM manuals, and regulatory standards.
8. Verify that tools and equipment are safe, tested, usable, and within current calibration dates.
9. Maintain spray equipment, paint booths, ventilation systems, and tools in a clean, safe, and operational condition.
10. Ensure proper storage and handling of paints, solvents, and other materials.
11. Adhere to risk assessment procedures, use personal protective equipment, and follow environmental protection guidelines.
12. Handle hazardous materials safely and comply with relevant safety regulations.
13. Obtain and utilize appropriate documentation such as component maintenance manuals, paint technical data sheets, and Material Safety Data Sheets.

1. Proficiency in surface preparation and paint application techniques.
2. Understanding of aircraft materials (e.g., aluminum, composites) and corrosion protection.
3. High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
4. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and process sheets.
5. Familiarity with paint thickness measurement tools.
6. Strong focus on safety, cleanliness, and prevention of foreign object debris (FOD).
7. Knowledge of paint mixing and color matching.
8. Good communication and teamwork abilities.
9. Familiarity with paint systems and application techniques, including the use and maintenance of painting tools and equipment.
10. Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to paint handling and application.
11. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
12. Good communication and documentation skills.
13. Completion of a recognized apprentice program or possession of a relevant KNEC Engineering Diploma or equivalent from a recognized institution.
14. Trade test training or certification in industrial or aircraft painting.
15. Knowledge of desktop publishing software and stencil cutting techniques.
16. Physical stamina and ability to work in confined spaces or at heights.
17. Familiarity with aerospace materials and coatings is an advantage.
18. Minimum of 1 year of experience in aircraft or industrial painting.
