About the Company

Taison Group is involved in medical planning and equipment projects for new and refurbished healthcare facilities. They focus on ensuring medical equipment is properly specified, assessed, planned, installed, commissioned, and integrated into healthcare infrastructure.

Job Description

The Biomedical Engineer at Taison Group will play a crucial role in healthcare infrastructure development by bridging clinical needs with engineering design and construction. This position requires close collaboration with architects, clinical planners, construction teams, MEP engineers, clients, and equipment vendors to deliver safe, functional, and compliant healthcare facilities within established project timelines. The role is primarily office-based in Nairobi but involves regular visits to active construction sites and healthcare projects, with occasional extended hours and weekend work necessary to meet critical installation and commissioning deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Participate in medical planning for healthcare projects, translating clinical requirements into spatial, technical, and infrastructure specifications.
  2. Advise on room layouts, workflow, equipment placement, and adjacency requirements for various clinical areas.
  3. Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings to ensure compatibility with medical equipment requirements.
  4. Contribute to functional design briefs, room data sheets, and medical equipment schedules.
  5. Conduct needs assessments and evaluate medical technologies, including imaging, life-support, monitoring, laboratory, and surgical equipment.
  6. Prepare technical specifications, evaluate vendor proposals, and support tendering and procurement processes.
  7. Assess equipment suitability, lifecycle costs, interoperability, serviceability, and compliance with applicable standards.
  8. Provide input on maintenance contracts, lifecycle costing, and spare-parts planning.
  9. Plan, coordinate, and oversee the installation, commissioning, and handover of medical equipment, particularly imaging systems.
  10. Develop installation schedules, method statements, risk assessments, and site-readiness checklists.
  11. Coordinate with construction teams, vendors, radiation protection officers, and facility managers on infrastructure requirements.
  12. Supervise site works involving equipment foundations, cabling, medical gas connections, and associated MEP installations.
  13. Coordinate equipment suppliers, contractors, and clinical end-users, resolving technical issues promptly.
  14. Oversee or perform equipment installation, calibration, acceptance testing, and commissioning.
  15. Develop and implement preventive maintenance programmes and schedules.
  16. Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate warranty and post-warranty servicing.
  17. Maintain accurate equipment inventories, asset registers, service histories, and technical documentation.
  18. Support the training of clinical and technical staff on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.
  19. Ensure medical equipment and installations comply with applicable Kenyan regulations, radiation safety requirements, and international standards.
  20. Conduct risk assessments, failure mode analyses, and investigations into medical device-related incidents.
  21. Support radiation protection planning and verification for medical imaging rooms.
  22. Maintain accurate documentation for audits, equipment handovers, and regulatory submissions.
  23. Promote infection prevention and control requirements during healthcare construction and equipment installation.
  24. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, quantity surveyors, site engineers, clinical planners, clients, and contractors.
  25. Provide technical input during design reviews, value engineering, and project change management.
  26. Keep abreast of developments in medical technology, regulatory requirements, and healthcare construction practices.
  27. Mentor junior staff and technicians and contribute to knowledge sharing within the Group.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field, such as Medical Engineering or Clinical Engineering; a master’s degree is an added advantage.
  2. Proven experience in medical planning, equipment assessment and selection, and project management of medical equipment installations, preferably involving CT scanners, X-ray systems, or other major imaging modalities.
  3. Hands-on experience in the installation, commissioning, or technical management of diagnostic imaging, critical care, and hospital equipment.
  4. Strong understanding of hospital infrastructure requirements, including medical gases, HVAC systems, electrical installations, radiation shielding, and infection prevention and control.
  5. Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings, as well as technical equipment manuals.
  6. Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, coordination, risk management, and delivery within agreed timelines and budgets.
  7. Knowledge of applicable Kenyan regulations and international standards governing medical devices and healthcare facilities.
  8. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and report-writing skills.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management tools; familiarity with CAD or BIM viewing software is an added advantage.
  10. Willingness to travel to project sites across Kenya and work flexible hours when required.
