Job Description
The Associate Dean will lead the strategic and operational planning for undergraduate medical education programs within the Faculty of Health Sciences, specifically through the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education. This includes curriculum leadership, academic governance, and managing program delivery and the academic calendar. The role also involves participating in broader strategic planning for the Faculty and University, overseeing student welfare, and supervising and mentoring faculty in educational leadership roles. The Associate Dean will be responsible for recruiting and reviewing performance of Directors within the undergraduate medical education portfolio, and for developing, implementing, and reviewing the quality of all undergraduate programs, including curriculum design, teaching quality, and program evaluation. They will establish strong relationships with other AKU entities for coordinated planning and quality control, and liaise with the Registrar’s Office, Examination Board, and other AKU/AKDN bodies for student intake, assessments, and academic experience. Financial oversight for undergraduate programs, leadership in educational scholarship, and participation in academic committees are also key. The role requires ensuring compliance with national regulators and licensing bodies, providing liaison to AKUHN and other AKHS facilities for clinical education, and engaging with local, regional, and international governments, universities, and professional bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead strategic and operational planning for undergraduate medical education programs, including curriculum leadership, academic governance, and program delivery.
- Contribute to the strategic planning of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Aga Khan University.
- Oversee the Undergraduate Medical Education program and ensure overall student welfare.
- Supervise and mentor faculty in educational leadership roles within the Medical College.
- Support the Dean's Office in recruiting educational leadership and manage recruitment and performance reviews for Directors in the Undergraduate Medical Education portfolio.
- Lead the development, implementation, and quality review of all undergraduate programs, covering curriculum design, teaching quality, and continuous improvement.
- Build strong working relationships with other AKU entities for coordinated program planning and quality control.
- Liaise with the Registrar’s Office, Examination Board, and other AKU/AKDN entities for student intake, examinations, assessment, and academic calendar coordination.
- Develop and manage the budget for undergraduate programs, taking responsibility for financial resources.
- Contribute to and lead educational scholarship initiatives.
- Lead and participate in relevant academic and educational committees.
- Ensure compliance with national regulators and licensing bodies, including accreditation and quality assurance.
- Act as a liaison to AKUHN and other AKHS facilities regarding educational goals and clinical learning experiences.
- Provide liaison to local, regional, and international governments, universities, and professional bodies related to education.
- Provide academic liaison for AKU-wide activities and to AKDN.
Requirements
- Hold a Master of Medicine or an equivalent qualification.
- A Diploma in Medical Education or equivalent is an advantage.
- Possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in Medical Education at a senior academic level.
- Be appointable to the academic rank of Associate Professor or higher.
- Be registered or eligible for registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
- Be recognized as a competent practitioner by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
- Demonstrate a record of scholarships in education and significant achievements in educational program development and implementation.
- Have experience in writing, designing, and implementing curriculum, along with innovative thinking.
- Exhibit excellent leadership, interpersonal, and strong communication skills.
