Head of Wildlife Operations

This strategic leadership role involves managing complex wildlife operations such as capture, captive care, and translocations, as well as monitoring and mitigating threats like poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and other security challenges. The Head will manage Wildlife Monitoring ranger units, armed security units, and other wildlife operations staff, while also fostering collaboration with external law enforcement and conservation agencies.

1. Lead and oversee ranger and patrol teams, developing and implementing effective patrolling strategies for rhino monitoring and preventing illegal activities.
2. Supervise armed security operations, including the deployment of personnel and K9 units, ensuring safe handling and maintenance of firearms in compliance with regulations.
3. Develop and implement a comprehensive security strategy for wildlife, staff, and infrastructure, continuously evaluating and adjusting protocols to address evolving risks.
4. Coordinate proactive anti-poaching initiatives, including intelligence gathering and rapid response, and develop partnerships with local law enforcement, communities, and conservation organizations.
5. Implement strategies to minimize human-wildlife conflicts through community collaboration, fencing projects, education programs, and rapid response teams.
6. Ensure optimal utilization and maintenance of vehicles, surveillance equipment, and security infrastructure, managing budgets and resources effectively.
7. Coordinate wildlife capture and translocations in collaboration with research, ecological monitoring, and veterinary units.
8. Build and maintain relationships with government authorities, law enforcement, and conservation partners, representing the Conservancy in security forums and managing armory registers.
9. Oversee control rooms and incident response, ensuring timely reporting, investigation, and resolution, and preparing detailed security reports for management and donors.
10. Ensure all security operations comply with legal and organizational standards, conducting regular risk assessments and audits.
11. Oversee measures for the safety of tourists, staff, and assets, developing emergency response protocols and providing safety briefings.
12. Perform any additional duties as assigned.

1. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Veterinary Medicine, or a related field; a Master's Degree is an added advantage.
2. Membership to relevant professional bodies is recommended.
3. Possess a minimum of 12 years of experience in Wildlife Operations, Management, and Security, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
4. Demonstrate a proven track record of managing wildlife security teams and protection operations.
5. Have experience working collaboratively with law enforcement agencies and conservation organizations.
6. Exhibit advanced leadership and team management skills.
7. Possess strong knowledge of wildlife and security operations.
8. Have working knowledge of wildlife behavior, habitat requirements, and interactions.
9. Demonstrate excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
