Operator – Wet Section

Mabati Rolling Mills Limited (MRM) is a member of the Safal Group, a manufacturing company founded in 1962. They specialize in producing steel products and are based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Operator for the Wet Section of the Pickling Line at MRM Mariakani is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the section. This involves removing scale from Hot Rolled Coils to produce high-quality pickled steel coils that meet customer specifications, quality standards, and production requirements. The role also ensures strict compliance with all safety and environmental standards.

1. Operate and monitor Wet Section equipment to achieve production targets and maintain process stability.
2. Monitor process conditions to ensure effective pickling performance and product quality.
3. Maintain stable operation of acid handling, circulation, and rinsing systems.
4. Maintain accurate process, production, and quality records.
5. Support planned and breakdown maintenance activities and perform Autonomous Maintenance tasks.
6. Monitor process performance and identify opportunities to improve productivity and resource efficiency.
7. Ensure all pickled products meet customer specifications and approved process requirements.
8. Identify and escalate quality, process, and equipment abnormalities.
9. Maintain accurate product traceability and process records.
10. Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA), and continuous improvement activities.
11. Comply with all Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ) requirements, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Permit-to-Work, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTOTO) requirements.
12. Handle acids and chemicals safely in accordance with approved procedures and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.
13. Identify and report unsafe conditions, spills, leaks, and environmental risks.
14. Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and emergency response equipment.
15. Maintain housekeeping standards through the implementation of 6S principles.
16. Participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Kaizen, and Operational Excellence initiatives.
17. Support initiatives aimed at reducing waste, chemical consumption, and quality losses.
18. Contribute ideas that improve safety, environmental performance, and operational efficiency.

1. Minimum KCSE Certificate.
2. Government Grade Test II in General Fitting, Mechanical Engineering Craft Certificate, or an equivalent technical qualification.
3. Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Industrial Plant Operations (added advantage).
4. Knowledge of Pickling Line Operations (added advantage).
5. Knowledge of Acid Handling and Chemical Process Operations (added advantage).
6. Training in 6S, TPM, and Autonomous Maintenance (added advantage).
7. Minimum 2 years of machine operating experience in manufacturing.
8. At least 1 year of experience in Pickling Line operations, chemical processing operations, or steel processing operations.
9. Experience in a steel processing, chemical processing, or heavy industrial environment (added advantage).
10. Proficiency in Pickling Line Wet Section operation.
11. Strong chemical process control skills.
12. Knowledge of acid handling and chemical safety.
13. Ability in quality inspection and process optimization.
14. Competence in equipment care and Autonomous Maintenance.
15. Awareness of TPM and Continuous Improvement principles.
16. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
17. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
