Job Description
This role involves the comprehensive analysis and assessment of Group Life risks, including new proposals, declarations, renewals, and amendments. The assistant will ensure all underwriting activities adhere to the company's established guidelines, pricing parameters, reinsurance arrangements, and delegated authority limits. This includes evaluating member data, benefits, occupation, and claims experience to determine appropriate underwriting terms such as rates, loadings, exclusions, and benefit limits. The role also requires assessing medical evidence for members exceeding free cover limits and coordinating reinsurance placements when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess new and renewal Group Life risks by evaluating member data, benefits, occupation, and claims experience.
- Prepare and review quotations, applying approved rates, underwriting guidelines, and delegated authority limits.
- Determine suitable underwriting terms, including rates, loadings, exclusions, benefit limits, and special conditions.
- Evaluate medical evidence for members exceeding the Free Cover Limit and communicate underwriting decisions.
- Identify cases requiring reinsurance and coordinate their placement or approval before accepting the risk.
- Review renewal performance and recommend appropriate pricing and terms based on claims experience and portfolio exposure.
- Review onboarding documents, KYC/AML requirements, premiums, and member schedules prior to policy issuance.
- Examine policy documents, endorsements, and scheme changes to ensure they align with approved underwriting terms.
- Provide technical guidance to clients, intermediaries, sales teams, Claims, and other internal stakeholders.
- Prepare and maintain weekly renewal reports, including status, premium at risk, outstanding requirements, and schemes at risk of lapsation.
- Prepare and monitor creditors/debtors’ reports, outstanding premium, and schedule reports, escalating ageing items for resolution.
- Maintain medical underwriting compliance reports, covering members above the Free Cover Limit, outstanding medical requirements, and pending decisions.
- Prepare quotation, production, turnaround-time, and portfolio performance reports as needed.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and escalate risks, exceptions, and decisions outside delegated authority.
- Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, reinsurance arrangements, regulatory requirements, data protection standards, and internal controls.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science, BCOM Insurance, or Statistics.
- Progress towards a Diploma in Insurance.
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in handling Group Life Schemes.
- Basic knowledge of regulations set by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).
- Strong analytical skills.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Technology-oriented with an interest in emerging technologies like AI and ML.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Ms Office suite applications.
- Basic automation knowledge.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
