Regional Safety & Security Director

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global environmental organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. They partner with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect Africa's vital natural areas and biodiversity.

The Regional Safety and Security Director will collaborate with TNC's Safety Team to develop and implement operational standards for workplace and program safety. This role involves providing expert safety support and guidance to staff and volunteers, organizing and leading training sessions and drills, and establishing regional safety and security committees. The director will also ensure adherence to all relevant country-specific workplace health and safety regulations, actively working to reduce physical safety and security risks for all TNC personnel and affiliates.

1. Provide expert input and hands-on support to TNC business units, regions, and project teams for developing emergency management plans.
2. Assist TNC Africa and Europe regions in identifying and implementing appropriate safety and security protocols for specific locations and activities.
3. Collaborate with TNC Safety professionals to update, maintain, and strengthen organizational compliance with global and regional safety and security policies, guidelines, and duty of care.
4. Design and deliver training programs and drills to enhance staff and volunteer awareness and adherence to safety and security policies.
5. Offer guidance and input on TNC's crisis response strategies related to safety and security.
6. Conduct regular safety and security reviews to ensure compliance with country-specific workplace safety, injury prevention requirements, and TNC's internal standards.
7. Oversee the review, update, and training of TNC staff on the Safety Incident Reporting Tool (SIRT) and other hazard reporting procedures, including investigation and reporting.
8. Advocate for safe work practices and ensure compliance with all relevant Conservancy policies.
9. Stay informed on current safety and security standards, industry best practices, and international relations within the supported regions.
10. Investigate safety and security incidents, including critical incidents and near-misses, conduct root cause analysis, and recommend business practice improvements.
11. Manage a network of regional safety and security liaisons to facilitate information exchange across TNC's operational areas.
12. Maintain a comprehensive regional site on CONNECT at TNC, offering clear safety and security information, guidance, and resources tailored to individual country programs.

1. Bachelor's degree in safety, security, emergency management, or a related field, combined with at least 7 years of relevant experience.
2. Proven experience in safety and security roles within Africa and Europe.
3. Demonstrated expertise in conducting safety and security audits, reviews, and investigations.
4. Strong understanding of safety legislation, codes of practice, and industry best practices.
5. Extensive experience working in international, global, and cross-cultural settings.
6. Ability to direct complex or multiple strategically important projects and consistently meet deadlines.
7. Excellent communication skills in English, both written, verbal, and graphical.
8. Experience in conservation, environmental, or sustainability sectors is highly desirable.
9. Prior experience networking with non-profit partners, community groups, or government agencies.
10. Certification in First Aid Officer and Remote First Aid Training is a plus.
11. Experience in small boat operation and maintenance, advanced boating certifications, or dive and boat training curriculum design.
12. Knowledge of current underwater scientific methodologies, conservation, and related projects.
