This role involves operating and continuously monitoring the Acid Regeneration Plant (ARP) to ensure adherence to established procedures. The primary goal is to facilitate effective acid regeneration and iron oxide recovery, while upholding product quality, environmental standards, and overall plant safety. The operator will be crucial in maintaining operational efficiency and compliance within the plant.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor the Acid Regeneration Plant and associated equipment according to approved procedures.
- Monitor process parameters, equipment conditions, and plant performance, reporting any abnormalities.
- Execute plant start-up, normal operation, and shutdown activities as per procedures.
- Track the movement of spent acid, regenerated acid, and iron oxide through process stages.
- Maintain accurate production, process, and shift handover records.
- Verify regenerated acid and iron oxide against established operating and quality requirements.
- Perform routine process checks and sampling activities.
- Identify and report quality deviations, abnormal process conditions, and non-conforming output.
- Maintain accurate quality and traceability records.
- Conduct routine equipment inspections and report abnormalities requiring attention.
- Perform approved Autonomous Maintenance activities within the scope of the role.
- Support planned maintenance, shutdowns, and breakdown interventions.
- Maintain workplace organization and housekeeping in line with 6S requirements.
- Comply with HSEQ requirements, LOTOTO, Permit-to-Work, and safe work procedures.
- Use prescribed PPE and follow approved chemical-handling and emergency-response procedures.
- Report spills, leaks, abnormal emissions, hazards, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Follow approved environmental controls relating to chemicals, process waste, and emissions.
- Maintain accurate operating logs, process readings, and production records.
- Communicate plant status, equipment abnormalities, quality concerns, and outstanding activities during shift handovers.
- Collaborate effectively with Production, Maintenance, Laboratory, and Pickling Line teams.
- Support onboarding and job-related knowledge sharing activities when required.
- Participate in TPM, Kaizen, 6S, and approved operational improvement activities.
- Report recurring process, quality, safety, and equipment concerns and contribute practical improvement suggestions.
- Support implementation of approved improvement actions within the assigned work area.
Requirements
- Possess a KCSE Certificate.
- Hold a Government Trade Test Grade III in Mechanical/General Fitting, Craft Certificate, or an equivalent technical qualification.
- Have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience operating process or production equipment within a manufacturing, chemical-processing, or heavy industrial environment.
- Possess at least one (1) year of experience in an Acid Regeneration Plant, Pickling Line, chemical-processing plant, furnace operation, or a similar industrial process plant.
- A Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Chemical Process Operations, or a related technical field is an added advantage.
- Training in chemical handling and emergency response is an added advantage.
- Training in fire safety and first aid is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of 6S and Autonomous Maintenance is an added advantage.
- Awareness of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems is an added advantage.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of acid regeneration and chemical-process operations.
- Possess the ability to operate and monitor process equipment within approved limits.
- Be able to read process instruments, alarms, and operating parameters.
- Have a basic understanding of regenerated acid and iron oxide quality requirements.
- Possess basic equipment inspection and Autonomous Maintenance skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of chemical handling, process safety, and environmental controls.
- Exhibit good communication and teamwork skills.
- Show strong safety consciousness and attention to detail.
- Be computer literate with basic Microsoft Office skills (Word and Excel).
