Job Description
The Senior Credit Analyst is responsible for overseeing the bank's credit risk exposure, ensuring it remains within the board-approved risk appetite. This involves evaluating borrower financial performance, assigning risk ratings, and monitoring credit limits and exposures to account for expected credit losses. The role also includes developing and reviewing credit risk management policies, conducting independent risk reviews of credit applications, and presenting findings to Credit Committees. Furthermore, the analyst will implement audit recommendations, manage the Credit and Political Risk Insurance Portfolio, identify early warning signals for potential asset deterioration, and collect data on country, sector, and obligor exposures to inform decision-making. The position also contributes to periodic risk reporting and supports the Credit Committee as secretary.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate the financial performance of borrowers and assign appropriate risk ratings for assigned portfolios based on various credit risk factors.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on credit limits, exposures, and portfolio characteristics for all clients to ensure adequate provision for expected credit losses.
- Develop and review credit risk management policies and procedures to guide risk-taking practices and decision-making.
- Conduct independent risk reviews and provide opinions on credit applications, offering feedback to business development officers during the structuring phase of credit facilities.
- Present risk reviews, opinions, and recommendations on residual risks to relevant Credit Committees for consideration in risk-taking decisions.
- Implement internal and external audit findings or recommendations within agreed timeframes.
- Oversee the Credit and Political Risk Insurance Portfolio, ensuring applicable exposures are adequately mitigated, processing renewals, acquiring new insurance, and preparing portfolio reports.
- Identify early warning signals at both client and portfolio levels to prevent unmitigated losses, conducting annual and interim reviews of existing credit facilities, monitoring covenants, and recommending corrective actions.
- Collect timely, credible, and accessible data on country, sector, and obligor exposures to provide decision-makers with appropriate information for risk-taking decisions.
- Contribute to the department’s periodic risk reporting process by ensuring timely data submission for corporate reporting.
- Act as Secretary to the Credit Committee, maintaining records of deliberations, ensuring structured meetings, and managing invitations and agendas.
- Train and mentor credit analysts to enhance their knowledge and skills for effective role performance.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field from a recognized university.
- Relevant professional qualification/certification such as ACIB, ACCA, CPA, CA, CIA, FRM, or PRM.
- Membership of a recognized professional body is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience and a proven track record in a Commercial/Development Banking or Financial institution environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of corporate and sovereign credit risk management concepts and international standards.
- Ability to enable business deal teams and cross-functional taskforces with an entrepreneurial mindset for optimal win-win solutions without compromising risks.
- Experience in trade finance as well as project and infrastructure finance structures.
- Strong interpersonal skills, capable of working in diverse environments and with culturally varied teams.
- Solid track record in developing and nurturing talent and managing diverse teams to drive engagement and performance.
- Ability to balance strategic thinking with detail orientation, flexibility in a fast-paced environment, and strong team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, including financial and risk modeling.
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or Portuguese is an advantage.
