M-KOPA is a FinTech company founded in 2011, operating in Kenya and other markets. They specialize in mobile-money-driven financial services and asset financing.
Job Description
This role is a pivotal finance leadership position within M-KOPA's Kenyan operations, requiring a proactive and engaged individual. The Finance Manager will oversee the entire monthly management reporting cycle, including executive commentary, and manage the IFRS 9 Expected Credit Loss model. Key responsibilities also extend to treasury functions, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and analyzing unit economics to inform critical commercial strategies across the market. Beyond traditional finance duties, the role involves acting as a strategic commercial partner, collaborating closely with the commercial team to scrutinize unit economics, develop financial models for new product launches, evaluate pricing and supply chain decisions, and prepare financial justifications for leadership and board discussions. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape both financial strategy and operational execution within Africa's leading mobile-money-driven fintech market, providing direct exposure to a mature yet rapidly evolving regulatory and commercial landscape.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the complete end-to-end monthly financial close process, including accruals, prepayments, intercompany transactions, depreciation, and foreign exchange.
- Generate detailed variance analysis, distinguishing market-specific impacts from one-off financial events.
- Monitor the loan book, analyze repayment behaviors across different cohorts, and manage provisioning and bad debt trends.
- Provide support for statutory and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Oversee documentation for funding and compliance processes, and assist with due diligence activities as necessary.
- Partner with the commercial team to analyze unit economics, model new product introductions, evaluate pricing and supply strategies, and construct financial cases for leadership and board review.
- Identify opportunities for process automation and enhance internal controls.
- Ensure adherence to IFRS standards, particularly IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IAS 21, revenue recognition, and IFRS 18 readiness, in areas requiring significant judgment.
Requirements
- Must be a Qualified Chartered Accountant (CPA(K), ACCA, CA, or equivalent) with a proven track record in finance management or a senior finance role.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in managing statutory and management reporting cycles.
- Possess deep and practical knowledge of IFRS, specifically IFRS 9, IFRS 16, IAS 21, and revenue recognition.
- Proven ability to manage end-to-end audit processes, from file preparation to addressing auditor queries.
- Exceptional financial modeling skills, capable of building complex multi-scenario models in Excel.
- Strong communication skills, able to clearly present financial conclusions to senior executives and lenders.
- Big 4 training (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG) is a significant advantage.
- Working knowledge of the Kenyan fintech, lending, or asset-financing sector is a plus, though strong curiosity and commercial instincts are prioritized.
