Driver

The Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of goods and passengers for Médecins Sans Frontières, ensuring all vehicle operations comply with traffic laws and MSF security protocols. The primary work location is Busia town, with required travel within Busia County and to Nairobi, and the flexibility to be deployed anywhere in Kenya. Key aspects of the role include strict adherence to security rules, timely communication of movements, and ensuring no unauthorized individuals or items are transported. The driver must also participate in briefings, ensure proper identification is displayed, verify communication tools are functional, and maintain accurate movement logs. Daily vehicle checks, reporting abnormalities to mechanics or supervisors, and ensuring the security of items and supplies within the vehicle are also critical. The role requires constant vigilance over the vehicle when outside the MSF base and performing additional logistics tasks as instructed.

1. Conduct daily technical checks of the assigned vehicle, including tires, oil, fuel, brakes, radio equipment, and spare parts, performing weekly checks as per the MSF Logbook, refilling as needed, and maintaining cleanliness.
2. Ensure the security of passengers by driving carefully, observing speed limits, traffic rules, and MSF security guidelines to prevent accidents.
3. Verify that all passengers have necessary travel documents and ensure non-MSF staff sign disclaimers before using the vehicle.
4. Oversee correct loading and unloading of the vehicle, submit documents to goods receivers, verify delivered goods, and return completed documents to Logistics, ensuring all goods have required paperwork.
5. Confirm that all vehicle documents and the driver's license are valid and present in the vehicle.
6. Report any incidents involving passenger or goods transportation to the line manager.
7. Be proficient in using all types of radios, codes, call numbers, and the radio alphabet, communicating with the base according to MSF policy to report position and potential issues.
8. Understand and adhere to security rules for vehicle movements, especially concerning customs, checkpoints, and roadblocks, ensuring all passengers are also aware and compliant.
9. Assist in upholding security rules and report any incidents to the line manager.
10. Ensure no driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substance.
11. Comply with the project's local security plan.
12. Communicate clearly and report departures and arrivals promptly as a security procedure.
13. Do not allow non-MSF individuals in the car without line manager permission and a signed discharge of liability form; no non-MSF items are permitted in the car.
14. Attend briefings before movements and debriefings upon return, sharing observations from the trip.
15. Ensure MSF identification is worn by passengers and visible in the car.
16. Verify that communication tools in the car are functional before any movement.
17. Ensure the car movement sheet is signed by staff/passengers who used the car.
18. Follow driver rosters and arrive 30 minutes early to check the car, equipment, and first aid kit for readiness.
19. Report any abnormal vehicle issues to the mechanic or line manager before movement.
20. Be responsible for the security of water and food in the car during movement, and all items and equipment left in the car, including safe loading and offloading.
21. Maintain sight of the vehicle at all times when outside the MSF base.
22. Perform other logistics tasks to support the project as instructed by the supervisor.
23. Be aware of service A, B, C requirements for the vehicle, with advice from the mechanic.

1. Possess a Form Four certificate.
2. Hold a valid driving license.
3. Demonstrate good knowledge of country roads, particularly in Western Kenya and Busia County.
4. Be fluent in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
5. Have 5+ years of driving experience.
6. Possess desirable knowledge of basic mechanics.
7. Reside in Busia County and have local knowledge of the area.
8. Exhibit strong results and quality orientation.
