Job Description

The HR Manager for Supermarkets will be responsible for spearheading the human resources strategy across all supermarket operations within the region. This involves collaborating closely with business leaders to align HR initiatives with operational objectives, ensuring optimal workforce planning, and managing talent effectively from attraction to retention. The role also encompasses driving employee engagement, fostering a positive work culture, and ensuring adherence to all relevant labor legislation and company policies. The manager will provide strategic guidance on employee relations, performance management, and organizational change initiatives, utilizing HR data to inform business decisions and support continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Partner with branch and business leadership to align business objectives with people strategies, enhancing operational effectiveness, productivity, and employee performance.
  2. Lead workforce planning, optimize manpower, and manage deployment across branches to ensure appropriate staffing levels and efficient resource utilization.
  3. Provide strategic guidance on employee relations, disciplinary actions, and grievance resolution, ensuring fair, consistent, and legally compliant practices in line with Kenyan labor laws.
  4. Drive the performance management cycle, assisting with objective setting, performance reviews, and accountability across the business.
  5. Develop and implement initiatives to strengthen employee engagement, improve employee experience, enhance culture, and boost retention, using insights to address key drivers.
  6. Support leadership in people management, team effectiveness, succession planning, and building high-performing teams.
  7. Collaborate with leadership on organizational changes, new store openings, process improvements, and other transformation initiatives, ensuring smooth people transitions.
  8. Ensure consistent application of HR policies and procedures, leveraging HR data and insights on headcount, turnover, absenteeism, and productivity to support informed business decisions.

Requirements

  1. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  2. Possess a professional HR qualification such as CHRP-K, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or an equivalent certification.
  3. Membership in a recognized HR professional body like IHRM is considered an advantage.
  4. A Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is an added advantage.
  5. Have 10-15 years of progressive HR experience, ideally within a large, multi-site, high-volume retail, FMCG, hospitality, or similar operational environment.
  6. Demonstrate strong experience in managing employee relations, performance, labor compliance, and workforce productivity.
