Addiction Counselor

The Addiction Counselor at Outspan Hospital is responsible for guiding clients through their recovery from substance use disorders. This includes performing thorough substance-use and psychosocial assessments to identify client needs, strengths, and potential risks. The counselor will collaborate with clients and a multidisciplinary treatment team to create personalized treatment and recovery plans. Key duties involve delivering individual, group, and family counseling using evidence-based approaches such as Motivational Interviewing and relapse-prevention interventions. The role also entails educating clients and their families on addiction, recovery strategies, coping skills, healthy lifestyles, and relapse prevention. The counselor will support clients across the entire recovery continuum, from engagement and treatment to abstinence, relapse management, reintegration, and aftercare. Monitoring client progress, identifying recovery barriers, and adjusting interventions as needed are crucial. Additionally, the counselor will provide crisis intervention within their scope of practice, facilitate referrals to appropriate medical or mental health services, and develop individualized discharge and aftercare plans to ensure continuous recovery. Maintaining accurate, confidential client records, treatment documentation, progress reports, and outcome data in accordance with hospital and Ministry of Health standards is also a core responsibility, alongside participating in clinical audits, quality improvement activities, and continuous professional development.

1. Conduct comprehensive substance-use and psychosocial assessments to identify clients’ treatment needs, strengths, and risks.
2. Develop individualized treatment and recovery plans in collaboration with clients and the multidisciplinary treatment team.
3. Provide individual, group, and family counseling using evidence-based addiction counseling approaches, including Motivational Interviewing and relapse-prevention interventions.
4. Provide psychoeducation on addiction, recovery, coping skills, healthy lifestyles, and relapse prevention to clients and their families.
5. Support clients throughout the recovery continuum, including engagement, treatment, abstinence, relapse management, reintegration, and aftercare.
6. Monitor client progress, identify barriers to recovery, and recommend appropriate adjustments to treatment interventions.
7. Provide crisis intervention within scope of practice and facilitate referral to appropriate medical, mental health, or specialized services when required.
8. Develop individualized discharge and aftercare plans with clients and the multidisciplinary treatment team to promote continuity of recovery.
9. Maintain accurate and confidential client records, treatment documentation, progress reports, and outcome data in accordance with hospital, departmental, and Ministry of Health standards.
10. Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement activities and continuous professional development.

1. Hold a Diploma in Counseling Psychology from a recognized institution.
2. Possess evidence of training in addiction counseling or chemical dependency counseling.
3. Have served in a similar position for a minimum period of three (3) years.
4. Must be a registered member of the Counselors and Psychologists Board (CPB).
5. Demonstrate excellent innovative and strong analytical skills.
