Job Description

The Design Engineer at Mabati Rolling Mills Limited is responsible for comprehensive engineering design and development, focusing on civil, structural, and building designs for modular projects. This includes preparing and reviewing various engineering documents, undertaking structural analysis, and developing solutions for steel structures and prefabricated construction. The role also involves coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces to ensure design compatibility and adherence to building codes and company procedures. Additionally, the engineer will manage assigned engineering projects, developing execution plans, monitoring progress, managing risks, and ensuring timely completion of deliverables while providing technical support and identifying opportunities for optimization.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop, review, and coordinate civil, structural, and building designs for modular projects.
  2. Prepare and review engineering calculations, design reports, structural drawings, fabrication drawings, general arrangements, construction details, technical specifications, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
  3. Undertake structural analysis and design optimization to ensure structural integrity, safety, durability, constructability, material efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  4. Develop engineering solutions for steel structures, light-gauge steel systems, modular buildings, and prefabricated construction applications.
  5. Coordinate civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical interfaces to ensure design compatibility and minimize construction conflicts.
  6. Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, statutory requirements, approved project specifications, and company procedures.
  7. Review design assumptions, loading criteria, material specifications, connection details, foundations, and other critical engineering parameters relevant to assigned projects.
  8. Coordinate design reviews with the Design Manager, incorporate technical feedback, and submit engineering deliverables for required approvals before construction or fabrication.
  9. Maintain accurate design calculations, drawing registers, revision histories, technical records, and design change documentation.
  10. Provide technical clarification and engineering support to manufacturing, procurement, project teams, site personnel, customers, consultants, and contractors.
  11. Identify opportunities for standardization, design reuse, material optimization, and value engineering without compromising safety or quality.
  12. Manage assigned engineering projects and workstreams from initiation through design, execution, commissioning, and handover.
  13. Develop and maintain project execution plans, schedules, work breakdown structures, resource plans, budgets, forecasts, and risk registers.
  14. Define engineering deliverables, project milestones, dependencies, and submission dates in coordination with the Design Manager and relevant project stakeholders.
  15. Monitor project progress against approved scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements, identifying deviations and recommending corrective actions.
  16. Coordinate engineering inputs to procurement plans and ensure timely availability of materials, equipment, technical information, and other project resources.
  17. Assess project risks, technical constraints, logistical challenges, and potential delays, and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
  18. Monitor project costs and resource utilization, identify cost variances, and recommend practical measures to improve efficiency and control expenditure.
  19. Evaluate alternative engineering and construction solutions to support value engineering and informed project decisions.
  20. Prepare project progress reports, cost and schedule forecasts, risk updates, and management reports.
  21. Ensure assigned tasks and deliverables are completed accurately and within agreed timelines, escalating material risks or constraints promptly.
  22. Share technical knowledge and provide guidance to internal teams, contractors, and project stakeholders on relevant engineering systems and best practices.
  23. Capture lessons learned from completed projects and recommend improvements to future designs and delivery processes.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution.
  2. Registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) at the appropriate applicable registration category.
  3. At least three (3) years of relevant engineering experience in civil, structural, construction, steel structures, prefabricated construction, modular buildings, or related project environments.
  4. At least two (2) years of experience in engineering design, project execution, and site coordination or management.
  5. Demonstrated experience delivering projects from concept development and detailed design through manufacturing coordination, construction, commissioning, and handover.
  6. Experience in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, forecasting, resource management, and progress reporting.
  7. Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, architects, consultants, fabricators, contractors, and subcontractors.
  8. Demonstrated ability to deliver projects against approved scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.
  9. Experience resolving technical issues arising during design, fabrication, installation, and construction.
  10. Advanced AutoCAD proficiency for engineering drawings, detailing, and design documentation.
  11. Competence in structural analysis, engineering calculations, and the preparation and interpretation of technical drawings.
  12. (Added advantage) Master’s degree in Structural Engineering, Construction Project Management, Business Management, or a related field.
  13. (Desirable) Membership of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) or an equivalent recognized professional body.
  14. (Desirable) Professional Engineer registration and any additional statutory authorization relevant to the role.
  15. (Desirable) Experience in remote-site projects, workforce accommodation, site offices, industrial facilities, infrastructure, or similar developments.
  16. (Desirable) Experience in manufacturing-led construction, offsite construction, modular building systems, or light-gauge steel construction.
