Job Description
The Mentor will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of the SOIL Program in Marsabit County, serving as a crucial link between Boma and participating households. Key activities include mobilizing and enrolling participants, forming and strengthening VSLA groups, building capacity, coaching businesses, monitoring intervention progress, and collecting data. The role requires close collaboration with community stakeholders and adherence to Boma's program quality, safeguarding, and accountability standards. The mentor will ensure effective program implementation towards improving participant livelihoods, nutrition, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand and deliver Boma's nutrition-sensitive poverty graduation approach and the SOIL Program design according to guidelines and timelines.
- Build trust with participants and provide practical, individualized coaching and mentorship.
- Conduct monthly mentorship sessions with assigned participants, Business Groups, Savings Groups/VSLAs, and households, following up on agreed actions.
- Track participant progress, identify those falling behind, and provide targeted support or escalate issues.
- Facilitate household visioning and action planning to help participants set and monitor livelihood, nutrition, savings, and well-being goals.
- Ensure efficient delivery of program activities to achieve participant and program targets.
- Utilize Boma’s digital systems and tools for planning, documenting, tracking, and reporting implementation.
- Identify implementation challenges and suggest practical adaptations to enhance participant engagement and program quality.
- Deliver training to participants on life skills, entrepreneurship, agri-nutrition, market linkages, and financial literacy.
- Guide participants in identifying viable, context-specific, and market-driven livelihood and enterprise opportunities.
- Support participants in starting and strengthening diverse enterprises, including livestock trading, food production, value addition, and service businesses.
- Coach participants in developing and implementing simple business plans, covering objectives, costs, pricing, sales, and cash-flow management.
- Strengthen practical business management skills such as record keeping, stock management, and customer management.
- Coach participants on profit management, savings, reinvestment, and responsible use of business income.
- Conduct monthly enterprise follow-ups to assess performance and help participants find solutions to challenges.
- Facilitate linkages between participants and relevant markets, buyers, suppliers, and financial service providers.
- Identify opportunities for income diversification and promote enterprises that improve access to nutritious foods.
- Support the formation, strengthening, and effective functioning of Savings Groups/VSLAs.
- Facilitate group sessions on savings, responsible borrowing, household budgeting, and financial planning.
- Coach participants to set savings goals and use savings strategically for investments and household needs.
- Monitor Savings Group performance and address governance, participation, or financial management challenges.
- Support viable Savings Groups and participants in linking with formal financial institutions.
- Promote responsible financial decision-making to avoid increasing household vulnerability.
- Deliver the SOIL nutrition resilience package through training, coaching, and practical demonstrations.
- Facilitate monthly agri-nutrition sessions covering food production, utilization, dietary diversity, and household resilience.
- Provide practical nutrition education and counseling, with referrals to qualified health providers when needed.
- Help households understand the link between income, food production, access, dietary diversity, and child well-being.
- Promote consumption of diverse, locally available, and nutritious foods.
- Support households in establishing and maintaining kitchen gardens, poultry, and other nutrition-sensitive activities.
- Conduct household follow-ups to assess adoption of recommended practices and address barriers.
- Facilitate household dialogues on nutrition, food security, livelihoods, budgeting, and child well-being.
- Support nutrition screening and identification of children or household members needing referral, in collaboration with CHPs.
- Ensure appropriate referral and follow-up for cases requiring health, nutrition, or protection services.
- Help households translate improved livelihood and income into better food consumption and child well-being.
- Support households in identifying key livelihood, food security, nutrition, climate, and economic risks.
- Coach households to develop practical actions for preparing for, managing, and recovering from shocks.
- Promote regenerative agriculture, sustainable natural resource management, and climate-resilient practices.
- Support participants in adopting approaches that improve productivity while protecting natural resources.
- Mobilize and engage community members in SOIL activities and foster ownership of interventions.
- Build effective working relationships with community leaders, government officers, and other stakeholders.
- Promote participation of men, youth, and other household members in program activities.
- Identify and nurture community champions to encourage peer learning.
- Collect and submit accurate, complete, and timely program data using approved digital and reporting tools.
- Maintain accurate records of participant, household, Business Group, and Savings Group activities.
- Update participant records and digital systems promptly after mentorship, training, and visits.
- Monitor individual and household progress against goals and outcome indicators.
- Use participant data to identify households needing additional coaching, follow-up, or referral.
- Report implementation progress, risks, and challenges to the Field Officer promptly.
- Document success stories, innovations, lessons learned, and good practices for program learning.
- Participate in program reviews, data quality checks, and learning meetings.
- Ensure data accuracy and confidentiality of participant information.
- Implement all activities according to Boma’s program standards, policies, and ethical guidelines.
- Treat all participants with dignity, respect, and fairness, ensuring inclusive participation.
- Explain Boma’s feedback, complaints, and safeguarding mechanisms to participants.
- Promptly report safeguarding, protection, fraud, or abuse concerns through established channels.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of participant information.
- Identify and escalate implementation risks affecting participant safety or program quality.
- Support Boma’s commitment to Do No Harm, inclusion, gender equality, and protection of vulnerable participants.
- Plan and organize daily field activities, maintaining accurate movement, fuel, and activity records.
- Ensure effective use of assigned program resources, including tablets, phones, and motorcycles.
- Maintain equipment in good condition and report any loss, damage, or maintenance needs.
- Submit required activity, fuel, movement, and other operational documentation on time.
- Use program resources responsibly and deliver activities cost-effectively.
- Comply with Boma’s field security, health and safety, and operational procedures.
- Collaborate closely with the Field Officer, Program Manager, and other teams for coordinated program delivery.
- Participate actively in team meetings, supervision, trainings, and program reviews.
- Share field insights, participant feedback, and implementation lessons with the team.
- Support other team members during major program activities and community events.
- Contribute to a positive team culture based on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Field Officer or Program Manager that contribute to SOIL Program objectives.
Requirements
- Hold at least a Diploma in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Agribusiness, Agriculture, Community Development, Nutrition, Community Health, Public Health, Social Work, Development Studies, Project Management, or a related field.
- Possess a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in community-based program implementation, livelihoods, entrepreneurship, nutrition, agriculture, economic inclusion, financial inclusion, or resilience programming.
- Demonstrate experience in community mobilization, participant mentorship, business coaching, or savings group facilitation.
- Experience working with women, pastoralist communities, or other vulnerable and rural populations is highly desirable.
- Experience using digital data collection tools and Microsoft Office is desirable.
- Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Exhibit strong coaching and facilitation skills.
- Be capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Be motivated, self-driven, and accountable.
- Must be a resident of the specific SOIL program implementation location/village.
- Be fluent in English and Kiswahili.
- Be fluent in the relevant local language spoken in the assigned location.
- Possess strong basic computer and digital literacy.
- Be able to work in remote and challenging environments.
- Must have a valid motorcycle riding license Class A1/A2, as daily motorcycle use is required for field activities.
