Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the operational efficiency and safety of mechanical plant machinery and equipment. This involves performing both preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnosing and repairing faults, and supporting installation and commissioning activities. The role also requires strict adherence to safety protocols, accurate documentation of maintenance activities, and active participation in continuous improvement initiatives within the mechanical maintenance department.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Fit, assemble, and install mechanical components, machinery, and equipment according to technical drawings and specifications.
  2. Carry out alignment, adjustment, and replacement of mechanical components using appropriate tools and measuring instruments.
  3. Perform authorized cutting, grinding, welding, and basic fabrication tasks as required.
  4. Support the installation, modification, and commissioning of machinery and plant equipment.
  5. Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on plant machinery and equipment.
  6. Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical faults to minimize equipment downtime.
  7. Replace defective components and restore equipment to operating condition within approved standards.
  8. Support breakdown response activities and equipment recovery efforts.
  9. Perform routine equipment inspections and report any abnormalities promptly.
  10. Check equipment condition, component alignment, fastening, and lubrication requirements.
  11. Support condition-monitoring and equipment-care activities.
  12. Comply with HSEQ requirements, Permit-to-Work, and LOTOTO procedures.
  13. Use prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintain safe working practices at all times.
  14. Report hazards, incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions promptly.
  15. Maintain housekeeping and workplace organization standards in line with 6S requirements.
  16. Complete job cards, maintenance reports, and inspection records accurately and on time.
  17. Communicate equipment condition, work progress, and unresolved issues to the Mechanical Technician.
  18. Collaborate effectively with Production, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to support operational requirements.
  19. Participate in TPM, 6S, Kaizen, and maintenance improvement initiatives.
  20. Contribute practical ideas to improve equipment reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
  21. Support the implementation of approved maintenance improvement actions.

Requirements

  1. KCSE Certificate.
  2. Government Trade Test Grade III in Mechanical Fitting or an equivalent Mechanical Fitter qualification.
  3. Craft Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or Plant Maintenance (added advantage).
  4. Training in welding and fabrication (added advantage).
  5. Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems (added advantage).
  6. Knowledge of 6S and Autonomous Maintenance (added advantage).
  7. Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in mechanical fitting, plant maintenance, or industrial equipment repair.
  8. At least two (2) years of experience maintaining industrial machinery and equipment.
  9. Experience in a manufacturing or steel-processing environment will be an added advantage.
  10. Strong mechanical fitting, assembly, and installation skills.
  11. Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting capability.
  12. Welding, fabrication, and workshop skills.
  13. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical specifications.
  14. Knowledge of plant machinery, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  15. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  16. Strong safety awareness and adherence to procedures.
  17. Good communication and teamwork skills.
  18. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  19. Basic computer knowledge.
