Credit Bank is seeking an Assistant Manager – Legal to provide essential legal assistance across the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the bank's adherence to legal standards, proactively identifying and mitigating potential legal risks, and delivering timely legal counsel to both business and support departments. This position is crucial for maintaining legal compliance and supporting the bank's operations in Kenya.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and review a variety of legal documentation, including securities and contracts.
- Periodically assess financing proposals and recommend optimal legal structures for deal transactions.
- Provide guidance to management and the bank on relevant laws, legal matters, rules, and regulations, ensuring full legal compliance.
- Develop and implement policies, processes, and procedures for the Legal Department.
- Offer bank-wide legal support and services to all units.
- Regularly update management on the status of legal issues and ensure consistent legal controls.
- Monitor Kenyan legislation and advise the bank on the impact of existing and newly enacted laws on its activities.
- Liaise with and provide full support to external professionals on all legal documentation, including securities, on behalf of the bank.
- Collaborate with external lawyers as needed, assist in preparing required pleadings, and regularly update litigation reports.
- Review all existing securities in Non-Performing Loans (NPL) and recommend appropriate remedial actions.
- Support debt recovery and collections processes related to non-performing facilities.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Law or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Possess a Post-graduate Diploma in Law.
- Be a registered member of the Law Society of Kenya.
- Have at least 6 years of relevant experience gained within a banking environment or a busy corporate/commercial legal practice.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of banking practice and theory.
- Exhibit excellent proficiency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of financial and commercial laws and regulations governing the banking industry.
- Have proven litigation skills.
- Be proficient in preventive lawyering skills and proactive management of legal risk.
- Demonstrate excellent legal drafting skills.
- Possess the ability to make major legal decisions and conduct legal negotiations on behalf of the bank.
