Job Description
This role involves comprehensive financial management, ensuring accurate and timely recording of transactions, adherence to accounting standards, and support for various audits. The clerk will also be crucial in maintaining tax compliance through the KRA iTax platform, managing banking and treasury activities, and assisting with financial aspects of infrastructure projects, including contract review and expenditure monitoring. The position requires close collaboration with other departments on payment, tax, and cost allocation matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage daily general ledger accounting and ensure accurate, timely recording of financial transactions.
- Execute month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing procedures.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepayments, provisions, and depreciation.
- Perform regular balance sheet reconciliations and follow up on outstanding items.
- Reconcile bank accounts, receivables, payables, fixed assets, and tax accounts.
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Maintain proper accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Assist with internal, external, and statutory audits by preparing necessary schedules and documents.
- Ensure accounting practices comply with applicable standards, company policies, and local regulations.
- Support tax filings via the KRA iTax platform, preparing and reconciling tax returns.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of tax returns and payments.
- Reconcile tax returns against accounting records and investigate discrepancies.
- Stay updated on changes in Kenyan tax laws, regulations, and KRA compliance requirements.
- Support responses to KRA queries, reviews, audits, and information requests.
- Support daily banking and treasury activities, including regular bank reconciliations.
- Assist with accounting and financial matters related to infrastructure or project-based operations.
- Review financial and tax implications of procurement, service, construction, and operational contracts.
- Collaborate with procurement, operations, legal, and HR departments on payment, tax, and cost allocation.
- Help monitor project-related expenditure and operating costs.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, with strong exposure to general ledger accounting and month-end closing.
- Practical working experience with KRA iTax and Kenyan tax compliance processes.
- Good working knowledge of Kenyan tax laws and statutory reporting requirements.
- Previous experience in infrastructure, construction, transport, roads, energy, PPP, or engineering sectors is highly desirable.
- Experience handling corporate banking transactions and bank reconciliations in Kenya.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with ERP or accounting systems.
- CPA(K), ACCA, or equivalent professional qualification, completed or in progress, is preferred.
- Fluent written and spoken English is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with KRA, banks, auditors, suppliers, and other external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of Chinese is an advantage.
