Job Description

As a Transport Lead, you will be responsible for the overall management of daily transport activities to meet both customer and business demands. This involves optimizing fleet utilization through efficient vehicle routing, load planning, and allocation. You will maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, monitoring driver progress and proactively addressing any unforeseen challenges or deviations. The role requires the use of transportation management systems and tracking tools for real-time monitoring of shipments and vehicles, ensuring timely collection and delivery. You will also be responsible for promptly resolving operational issues and service disruptions, overseeing vehicle availability, maintenance, and compliance, and monitoring transport costs to identify savings opportunities without compromising safety or service quality. Additionally, you will manage supplier and contractor performance, ensuring adherence to transport legislation, road safety regulations, and company policies.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and coordinate daily transport activities to meet customer and business requirements.
  2. Monitor fleet utilization and optimize vehicle routing, load planning, and vehicle allocation.
  3. Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  4. Monitor driver progress and promptly address unforeseen challenges or deviations.
  5. Utilize transportation management systems and tracking tools for real-time shipment and vehicle monitoring.
  6. Ensure on-time collection and delivery of shipments.
  7. Resolve operational issues and service disruptions promptly.
  8. Supervise transport controllers, planners, drivers, and support staff.
  9. Conduct daily operational briefings and performance reviews.
  10. Develop employee capability through coaching, mentoring, and training.
  11. Promote a positive safety culture and employee engagement.
  12. Ensure service levels meet or exceed contractual customer expectations.
  13. Oversee vehicle availability, utilization, maintenance, and compliance.
  14. Monitor transport costs, including fuel, maintenance, labor, and subcontractor expenses.
  15. Identify cost-saving and productivity opportunities without compromising safety or service delivery.
  16. Manage the performance of transport-related suppliers and contractors.
  17. Ensure compliance with transport legislation, road safety regulations, and company policies.
  18. Ensure drivers hold valid licenses and permits and complete required training.
  19. Ensure loads depart within the agreed dispatch window and control delivery documents, keys, GPS devices, fuel cards, and mobile phones.
  20. Coordinate resolution of delivery issues with customer service and relevant stakeholders.
  21. Maintain accurate transport records and operational documentation.

Requirements

  1. Hold a Diploma or Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field, with relevant professional qualifications.
  2. Possess 3-5 years of experience in transport/logistics operations, demonstrating responsibility for coordinating teams, resources, and daily service delivery.
  3. Have 3-5 years of experience within a transport logistics, supply chain, or FMCG environment.
  4. Demonstrate practical experience in dispatch planning, route and load optimization, fleet utilization, driver monitoring, transport scheduling, TMS/tracking tools, customer service, and operational issue resolution.
  5. Experience supporting Kenya-based transport operations and knowledge of applicable local road transport requirements.
  6. Be fluent in both written and spoken communication.
