Job Description
The Transport Lead at DHL Supply Chain Kenya is tasked with managing daily transport operations to guarantee the secure, compliant, cost-effective, and efficient movement of goods. This role involves leading transport teams, optimizing fleet performance, meeting customer service standards, and implementing continuous improvement strategies to boost operational efficiency, safety, and productivity. The lead will coordinate daily activities, monitor fleet utilization, manage stakeholder relationships, track driver progress, and use transportation management systems for real-time shipment monitoring. They are also expected to resolve operational issues, supervise staff, conduct performance reviews, and develop employee capabilities through coaching and training.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate daily transport activities to meet customer and business requirements
- Monitor fleet utilisation and optimise vehicle routing, load planning, and vehicle allocation
- Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Monitor driver progress and promptly address unforeseen challenges or deviations from plans
- Utilise transportation management systems and tracking tools for real-time shipment and vehicle monitoring
- Ensure on-time collection and delivery of shipments
- Promptly resolve operational issues and service disruptions
- Supervise transport controllers, planners, drivers, and support staff
- Conduct daily operational briefings and performance reviews
- Develop employee capability through coaching, mentoring, and training
- Promote a positive safety culture and employee engagement
- Ensure service levels meet or exceed contractual customer expectations
- Oversee vehicle availability, utilization, maintenance, and compliance
- Monitor transport costs, including fuel, maintenance, labor, and subcontractor expenses
- Identify cost-saving and productivity opportunities without compromising safety or service delivery
- Manage the performance of transport-related suppliers and contractors
- Ensure compliance with transport legislation, road safety regulations, and company policies
- Ensure drivers hold valid licenses and permits and complete required training
- Ensure loads depart within the agreed dispatch window and control delivery documents, keys, GPS devices, fuel cards, and mobile phones
- Coordinate resolution of delivery issues with customer service and relevant stakeholders
- Maintain accurate transport records and operational documentation
Requirements
- Hold a Diploma or degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field, with a relevant professional qualification
- Possess 3-5 years of experience in transport/logistics operations, demonstrating responsibility for coordinating teams, resources, and daily service delivery
- Have 3-5 years of experience within a transport logistics, supply chain, or FMCG environment
- Exhibit practical experience in dispatch planning, route and load optimization, fleet utilization, driver monitoring, transport scheduling, TMS/tracking tools, customer service, and operational issue resolution
- Possess experience supporting Kenya-based transport operations and applicable local road transport requirements
- Demonstrate fluent written and spoken communication skills
