Job Description

The Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic at the U.S. Embassy to Kenya is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance and repair of all U.S. Government vehicles at the post, including those used by the Motor Pool and other USG agencies like KEMRI, CDC, and Peace Corps. This critical position ensures the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of the entire vehicle fleet, including armored vehicles, by performing regular servicing, inspections, and managing DriveCam components. The mechanic also plays a role in procurement by recommending and overseeing outsourced repair work to ensure quality and adherence to contract specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform preventative and scheduled mechanical and electrical maintenance on USG vehicles.
  2. Conduct routine vehicle services such as oil changes, brake and suspension work, tire rotations, and minor electrical repairs.
  3. Service the armored vehicle fleet in accordance with annual maintenance guidelines.
  4. Inspect vehicles to identify servicing or repair needs, parts replacement, and safety corrections.
  5. Install, remove, and maintain DriveCam components, including Event Recording Devices, brackets, and GPSs, ensuring they do not drain vehicle batteries.
  6. Recommend repair work requiring outsourcing to supervisors.
  7. Inspect outsourced repair work during progress and upon completion to ensure high-quality parts and workmanship.
  8. Maintain individual vehicle files and provide necessary reports.
  9. Update electronic systems/ILMS with appropriate record data.
  10. Monitor and provide feedback to ensure adequate parts stock is maintained in the warehouse for timely servicing.

Requirements

  1. Ability to obtain and hold a security certificate or Public Trust security clearance.
  2. Completion of secondary school.
  3. Completion of a minimum of 3 years of Automotive Technical Training or apprenticeship, acquiring an Automotive Technician Craft 3 certificate or equivalent.
  4. Five years of continuous hands-on experience as a vehicle mechanic in a recognized institution.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, including customer service, teamwork, and communication.
