Job Description
The Clinical Nutritionist/Dietitian, reporting to the DCNO, is responsible for delivering comprehensive nutrition services. This includes integrating nutrition therapy with patient clinical goals, calculating and prescribing nutrition orders for enteral and parenteral feeding, and continuously assessing patient nutritional needs and restrictions. The role also involves developing individualized dietary care plans, providing targeted counseling, and offering age-specific guidance on healthy eating to improve overall quality of life. Additionally, the nutritionist will monitor and document nutritional status, consult with medical staff on patient needs, and educate patients and families on dietary principles and modifications to encourage long-term behavioral changes. The position also entails monitoring food service operations for compliance with nutritional, safety, and quality standards, developing educational resources, and leading menu development.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver nutrition therapy integrated with the patient’s clinical goals as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Calculate and prescribe nutrition orders for enteral and parenteral feeding based on clinical indications and nutritional needs.
- Screen, assess, and continuously evaluate patient nutrition needs and restrictions.
- Develop individualized dietary care plans and provide targeted nutrition counseling.
- Offer age-specific guidance to patients and groups on nutrition and healthy eating to improve their overall quality of life.
- Monitor and document nutritional status using established guidelines.
- Consult with medical staff to determine and meet the unique nutritional needs of each patient.
- Educate patients and families on dietary principles, food selection, meal preparation, and recommended modifications.
- Encourage long-term behavioral changes through clear and compassionate nutrition education.
- Monitor food service operations for compliance with nutritional, safety, and quality standards.
- Develop and maintain up-to-date educational resources for patients and staff.
- Lead the development and standardization of recipes and menus tailored to the nutritional needs of various patient groups.
- Ensure meals meet prescribed diet plans and are acceptable in terms of palatability and appearance.
- Mentor dietetic interns and provide in-service training to clinical staff.
- Participate in continuous professional development through seminars, workshops, and professional networking.
Requirements
- Hold a Diploma or Degree in Nutrition from a recognized institution or university.
- Possess a valid license from the Nutrition Association of Kenya.
- Have a minimum of 2 years of continuous experience in an acute care hospital setting.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation.
- Be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Possess motivational and leadership abilities.
